Having Joyce King as a guest instructor at Southern NH Dance Theater has been a wonderful experience for my students. Her class material is refreshing, motivating & fun yet challenging & inspiring for every student of the class no matter what age or level. I am always impressed with how Joyce takes the time to get to know each individual … this is so important! I look forward to having Joyce return. She is such an energetic, organized and dependable instructor. She has quickly become a popular guest at our school.”

I first met Joyce King in the fall of 2002, when I moved to New York to start my freshman year at Columbia University. Throughout my time in college, Joyce’s warm, welcoming demeanor and rigorous class helped me to stay grounded; her energy, encouragement, and constant support were invaluable to me as I adjusted to the fast pace of Columbia and New York City.

I always looked forward to Joyce’s Saturday afternoon class, knowing that no matter how many dancers showed up or what our skill level was, Joyce would invest herself 100% into making those 90 minutes invigorating, challenging, and exhilarating for us. Joyce masterfully walks the fine line of challenging her students as dancers while unconditionally supporting us as people. This combination makes her a rarity in the world of New York open classes, and for it I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Joyce is a very hands on teacher who has aided me to find my inner dancer.  She taught me how to emote and dance with my heart.  Joyce has provided me with boundless opportunities that I may not have had if I had not known her. She is a wonderful mentor and is always willing to lend advice.

"My students had a wonderful time working with Joyce, she has a way of connecting with the dancers that makes them not only learn the steps but really understand and perform the choreography."

Maria Laura Pardo Mannucci, Artistic Director—DanceWorks Costa Rica

Joyce has infinite energy that is contagious to her students.  Her unique style of jazz is relevant, challenging and always fun. She is a dedicated and a caring teacher, inspiring her dancers to excel. You will never tire of Joyce's fresh, exciting choreography. I truly look forward to dancing with Joyce every week. She provides such a warm environment, and it is always fun to see what she'll come up with next (I am never disappointed). I am so grateful to have found a class like hers in this big City! Natalie Wieland, NYC

"What I love about Joyce's class is that she's truly a TEACHER! No matter the size of her class the individual attention is fantastic.  Her classes are challenging yet she always takes the time to evaluate everyone's strengths and weaknesses and gives the corrections needed to improve.  I appreciate taking a class where proper technique is stressed but I am still challenged to perform and evolve as an artist. As a professional actor striving to push myself expressively, I can not think of a better lesson to learn!  They say that if you can make it in NY, you can  make it anywhere.
Thanks Joyce for helping me to grow stronger as a dancer and performer and for helping me make it in the Big Apple!”

Joyce King makes dance both accessible and un-intimidating for the ballet-school dropouts of
the world. Additionally, as an English teacher, I can attest to
both the difficulty in and the importance of being able to consistently think, or in this case dance, way
outside the proverbial box, which
is just what she asks of her students.

Joyce King is one of the most enjoyable and instructive classes I have taken in New York City. Her warm-up is thorough with a strong technical base.  She spends time with her students, giving corrections and providing insight into the proper placement of the body.  Her choreography roots itself in feeling, providing an artistry for dancers to feed off of, making her movement their own.  In addition, she creates a positive energy for her students, always encouraging them to dance to the best of their ability.

There are so many dance classes and choreographers in NYC that finding the right one can truly be a daunting task, I feel extremely privileged to have found Joyce King’s classes at STEPS. When I first started taking Joyce’s class I was a self-proclaimed back line dancer. My job in dance classes was merely to stay alive, attempt to go the same direction as everyone else, and not draw attention to myself. Joyce does not allow anyone to label themselves in class and she certainly was not going to allow me to stay in the back line. Perhaps, one of the best qualities of Joyce as a teacher is that she cares so much about her students that she will teach with whatever method it takes for them to succeed. If you need the combination counted, she’ll count- if you need words, she’ll give you the lyrics- if you need her to stand on her head while teaching it. . well,. . I wouldn’t be surprised ……. more
